Deep into the Lenten season we hear this gospel (John 11:1-45) that gives us a very rich picture of Jesus. His humanity is very evident. John tells us of Jesus’ love for Lazarus. At the news of his death, Jesus shudders, moved with the deepest emotions. He weeps. The bystanders acclaim, “See how he loved him.”
Jesus’ divinity is also very evident. After a prayer, he beckons, “Lazarus, come out!” Lazarus comes forth from the tomb. Jesus demonstrates that he is the Resurrection and the Life. He manifests the very glory of God.
Lazarus represents all the beloved disciples of Christ, including us. His humanity and divinity are toward us in the same strong way. How do you sense Christ caring for you in a deeply personal way? What in you does Christ want to raise up to greater life?
