There are three terms we use to name our experience of God: transcendence (God’s greatness), immanence (God’s nearness), and the divine indwelling. Today’s gospel highlights the divine indwelling presence. Jesus promises the presence of the Holy Spirit who “will be in you.” He also says that “I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you.”
This third form of God’s presence — the divine indwelling — is both wonderful and humbling. It is a truth we must both realize and respect in ourselves and in other believers. It prompts us to do Christ-like things.
How do you know God’s greatness? How do you know God’s nearness? How do you know the indwelling divine presence in yourself? In others?
