The marvelous feeding of a large crowd of people with bread and fish is related six times in the gospels. Today we hear the version in John’s gospel. John portrays Jesus himself distributing the loaves of bread and fish to the people. (In the other gospels Jesus has his disciples doing the distribution.) Jesus gives us a model of being directly involved in feeding the hungry.
This direct involvement of Jesus is echoed by the boy with five loaves and two fish who is willing to hand them over for this feeding. In the first reading a man with twenty barley loaves is willing to help feed a hundred people with what he has.
In what ways is the Holy Spirit prompting you to be directly involved in the feeding of the hungry?
