The gospel for today is the wonderful story of the wedding at Cana. The proclamation of the miracle ends by naming it the beginning of Jesus’ signs to reveal his glory to his disciples, including us. It happens on the wedding day of an unnamed couple who are beginning their marriage. It takes us back to the beginning on the first page of our Bible. God is always doing something new.
In this gospel story we hear the only words Mary speaks in John’s gospel. She tells the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” These are watch-words for all the servant-followers of Christ in all the Christian ages. We are to do whatever Christ asks of us. The first step is to know what Christ asks of us. Then we are to do it.
How does knowing and doing what Christ asks a new beginning for you?
