During my years in grade school we began each school day by standing and praying our morning prayer and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance (“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America…”). These ritual acts reaffirmed our devotion and loyalty to God and our country.
On this Third Sunday of Easter in the Eucharistic Liturgy we hear how the apostles gave their allegiance to God by insisting on proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ. The vision in the Book of Revelation portrays heavenly beings expressing their allegiance and devotion to the Risen Christ who is called the Lamb of God. In the gospel the beloved disciple affirms allegiance and devotion to Christ with the words, “It is the Lord!” And Peter is asked three times about his love and devotion to Christ and is asked to express this allegiance in specific actions of leadership, service, and care for the community.
How do you pledge your allegiance to the Risen Christ with words and acclamations? How is God calling you to demonstrate this devotion and love with specific actions?
