There is a wise saying that goes like this: “The best things in life are not things.” That wisdom saying is supported in the Liturgy today. “All things are vanity” (Qoheleth). “Seek what is above…think of what is above” (St. Paul). Grow “rich in what matters to God” (Jesus).
In our materialistic culture with a strong emphasis on consumerism we need to hear the kind of challenge the Word of God gives us today. What matters to God? Clearly the list includes love of God, service of those in need, peace making, standing up for the voiceless, doing our part for the common good. Faith, hope, and love are the three theological (godly) virtues we are called to embody.
