There are our thoughts and there are God’s thoughts. There are God’s ways and there are our ways. They aren’t always the same as the prophet reminds us today. In fact, Isaiah says that they are often far apart. Today’s gospel parable goes against the grain of how we would expect people to be treated “fairly” in common business practice. In the parable Jesus highlights the equality of all of his disciples and the mystifying generosity of God.
The Liturgy this Sunday reminds us that our journey of faith, hope, and love is formed and shaped by how God is toward us human beings. We cannot get stuck in the trap of thinking that God’s ways should be according to our ways or our thinking. This formation happens through our participation in the Eucharist and other sacraments as well as through our prayer pondering over Bible passages.
When have you been mystified by God’s way toward you? What helps you to constantly be re-formed more and more according to God’s way?
