On this Third Sunday of Easter there is a rich sense of the Risen Christ assuring us of his presence and action in our lives. Like the early disciples we know his presence in the breaking of the bread (an early term for the celebration of the Eucharist). His acclamation, “Peace be with you” continues to echo into our twenty-first century. His declaration, “It is I myself” in your midst gives us assurance much like parents will assure their presence to a frightened child.
In the letter of John today, Christ is named an Advocate who is with us and helps us to experience God’s forgiveness and gracious love when we most need this assurance.
When are you especially assured of the presence of Christ in your life? When are you called to assure other people of the nearness of Christ?
