The Environmental Concerns Committee invites you to celebrate the ecumenical Season of Creation with us through Oct. 4th. One way to celebrate is by donating your worn out sneakers (tennis shoes, gym shoes) to our sneaker collection to be recycled. Bring them in by Sunday, Sept. 24th and place them in the designated bin in the Commons. We can only accept sneakers. NO sandals, Keds, dress shoes, boots, or other footwear.
In the United States, 200 million pairs of shoes and sneakers end up in landfills each year. Since sneakers are manufactured with materials that are not biodegradable, they remain in landfills or are incinerated, which leads to toxic chemicals in our air and soil. The process of manufacturing sneakers produces large amounts of CO2 which contributes to the serious effects of climate change and global warming. Recycling and reusing sneakers keeps sneakers out of landfills, reduces the need for manufacturing new shoes and sneakers, and supports a growing circular economy (where we reuse and recycle products rather than putting them in landfills).
