For Catholics, the Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. At Baptism we receive and celebrate God's free gift of grace and salvation through Jesus Christ. In Baptism we are reminded that God has chosen us to live and grow with God's people. As the first Sacrament of initiation, Baptism is also the sign of a lifelong relationship with God and with the Church.
When Parents present their child for baptism, they are asking the Church to receive the child as part of the family of Jesus Christ. They are also making a commitment to their child to help him or her become part of this community of faith. At baptism parents are told to "make it their constant care to bring up their child in the practice of the faith."
The Catholic Church today clearly teaches that sacraments are to be presented only to persons with identifiable indicators of faith. With infant baptism these indicators must come from the parents. Risen Savior takes the responsibility to prepare, nurture and support parents as they prepare to bring their child to the Baptismal font very seriously. We offer Baptism preparation classes for infants and children up to four years of age usually on the first Tuesday of the month from 7:00-9:00 p.m. At the class parents will have a chance to meet other expectant and new parents from the parish and share ideas and interests with them. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions, to go over the Rite of Baptism, and to discuss the symbols used during Baptism. Please bring a copy of your baby's birth certificate to the Baptism class!
