June 15, 2014: Mercy at the Heart of God
We begin our return to Ordinary Time in our liturgical year with the feast of the Most Holy Trinity. This brings us to the very core of our Christian faith. Today God gives a self-revelation to Moses and us: "The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity." This mercy of God is toward us in our weakness, our vulnerability, and even in our sin.
With this way of God toward us in mind, St. Pope John XXIII, at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council in 1962 said: "Nowadays the Spouse of Christ [the Church] prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity." The need to emphasize God's mercy continues in 2014.
How do you experience first hand God's mercy toward you? How is God asking you to be merciful to other people?
