May 24, 2015: Living In and By the Spirit
St. Basil the Great, one of the most significant leaders in the Eastern Church during the fourth century, likens the presence of the Holy Spirit to the sunshine. The sunshine permeates all the atmosphere and is enjoyed by each person as though it were for each person alone. So the Spirit pours forth grace sufficient for everyone and yet is present as though exclusively to each person who cooperates with the Spirit of God.
This wonderful truth only makes a difference when we are aware of the blessing of the Holy Spirit just as we are aware of the blessing of the sunshine. As we hear in the Liturgy of the Word on this feast of Pentecost, we must live by the Holy Spirit and be guided by the Holy Spirit. This is manifested in the good fruit we bear (see Galatians 5:22-23).
When are you especially aware of the presence and prompting of the Holy Spirit? What does it look like for you to be guided by the Holy Spirit?
