September 6, 2015: What Kind of Healing and Restoration
Today's Liturgy is rich with a message of healing and restoration. Isaiah portrays God coming to open blind eyes and deaf ears and to loosen mute tongues. Jesus heals a person who is deaf and has a speech impediment.
This kind of restoration was especially critical in an intensely oral culture. (Most people couldn't read or write.) It meant that a person was once again integrated into the community. The situation is different today with modern technology, including TTY (teletypewriter) and internet-based relay services.
Perhaps we can imagine the healing and restoration God wants to do beyond the physical with impairments like lack of understanding, too busy or preoccupied to notice, prejudice, or a hardened heart.
