Fr. Tom’s Reflections

February 21, 2016: The Mystery of Faith

There is a rich sense of mystery in the Liturgy of the Word on this Second Sunday of Lent. Abraham experiences God's presence and promise in a deep trance. Jesus is gloriously transfigured on a mountain before his three close friends. Paul tells us that "our citizenship is in heaven." This dimension of mystery balances our need for tangible and understandable data in so many things.

During each celebration of the Eucharist we acclaim the mystery of faith: "We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again." The Eucharist, Lent, and life itself all include the mystery of faith. Our experience of mystery is a good sign of the reality of God's presence because we human beings can never completely comprehend God and how God works. Sometimes we simply stand in awe of God's presence.

When do you experience the mystery side of faith? How does Lent help you to be present to mystery?
