Pillars of Living Lent: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving

January 25, 2023 By Grace Koleczek

Sometimes it might feel like Lent is part of the same old routine, but each Lenten Season, God invites us to something new! The pillars remain the same but their meaning may evolve or deepen as our lives change.

This Lent, you’re invited to join in one or more of the following ways to connect anew to Lent.

Fasting: “Rend Your Heart: Offering Humility in Lent”

What: Occasional fasting is widely practiced and has become a cornerstone of Lenten practice, but how might we think holistically about our call to “fast”? Where does fasting fit into our daily spirituality and can we approach the effort so as to deepen our love of God and neighbor beyond the Lenten Season? Join Mike Rios-Keating of Catholic Charities Twin Cities for a conversation on fasting, humility, and an invitation to re-think our spiritual commitments.

When: Tuesday, Feb. 28th from 6:30-7:30pm

Where: Bays at Risen Savior

Free will donations accepted. Childcare available with RSVP by Feb. 21st.

Prayer: Meaningful Conversations about Prayer Series

What: This is a 4-part series with presentations, individual reflections, and small-group engagement. The series is an opportunity to learn and share important ideas about communicating with God.

When: Tuesdays from 7-8:30pm

  • Mar. 7th: How and Why We Pray
  • Mar. 14th: Praying with Our Own Words
  • Mar. 21st: Praying with Scripture
  • Mar. 28th: Praying with the Church’s Words

Where: Bays at Risen Savior

Almsgiving: Joining Hands in Loving Service to Others

Almsgiving means donating resources to the poor and practicing the works of mercy and acts of justice. In addition to many regular opportunities to serve, this Lent we have a few special projects, too! These are not only opportunities for almsgiving but also for parish integration and getting to know one another across cultures by joining hands in service.

JustFaith 2022: Faith and Racial Equity

June 7, 2022 By Grace Koleczek

In July 2022 Risen Savior polled our parishioners to ask which justice issue they would like to learn more about in a JustFaith group. The topic with the most interest is “Faith and Racial Equity: Exploring Power and Privilege.” We are excited to offer this small group starting the week of Sept. 12th!

What is JustFaith? JustFaith programs are 8-10 week small-group experiences where participants commit to learning, praying, and reflecting together about a justice issue facing us today.

Why Faith and Racial Equity? This is a 10-week small group with an opening retreat, 8 group sessions, and an immersion experience. Program goals include

  • Develop awareness of the ways that racial privilege impacts our communities and ourselves
  • Through a deep dive into the Gospel of Luke, learn how Jesus’s teachings guide us in seeking racial justice in today’s world.
  • Learn practical tools for becoming anti-racist, and for effecting change in our communities.

This program awakens participants to the economic systems, public policies, cultural norms, and hidden biases that empower some and oppress others.

When: We are offering 2 group times: Mondays in person at Risen Savior from 10am-12pm and Wednesday evenings virtually from 7-9pm. Groups meet weekly starting the week of Sept. 12th through the week of Nov. 14th. (Please note: we changed the in-person group to meet on Mondays instead of Tuesdays to accommodate more schedules.)

Cost: The program registration is $50 which includes a copy of each of the 3 books needed and the program’s supplemental materials from JustFaith. Participants receive online and hard copy access.

Adult Faith Formation

June 7, 2022 By Grace Koleczek

Adult Faith Formation at Risen Savior is looking for people who feel nudged to share their gifts through the following ministries:

  • Hospitality at baptisms: this would involve setting up for infant baptisms before Mass, greeting families and their guests, & putting items away afterwards. Training and mentoring provided! Commitment is 3-4 times/year on Sundays when we have baptisms; typically during 9 or 11am masses. People who are gifted at making people feel welcomed and comfortable would be great fits for this role!
  • RCIA Sponsors: RCIA is the process through which adults receive sacraments of initiation into the Catholic church. Sponsors journey with their candidate through the process by attending RCIA sessions at least once/month and checking in with their candidate via phone, text, email, or in person as works for their relationship. They also attend the RCIA Rites throughout the year. We never know who will present themselves to be an RCIA candidate each year, so right now we are compiling a list of interested potential sponsors! The RCIA process typically runs Sept-Pentecost the following year. Sponsors must be fully initiated Catholics. People who enjoy forming meaningful relationships, sharing their faith, and mentoring others would be great fits here!
  • Baptism Catechists: this role would lead the baptism preparation class for parents and godparents. Training and mentorship provided. Commitment is 4-6 times/year on the first Monday/monthly from 7-8:30pm. Currently the class is on Zoom. People with gifts for teaching and facilitating small groups would be great fits!
  • RCIA Team: RCIA is the process through which adults receive sacraments of initiation into the Catholic church. They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, it takes a village of disciples to mentor a person into the faith! Team members assist in facilitating the RCIA sessions; curriculum and lesson plans with training and mentorship provided. Team members should be fully initiated Catholics. Commitment will vary based on the response. Most likely will involve 1 Sunday/month September through Pentecost from 10-11:30am and 1x/month team meeting. People with gifts for teaching, facilitating, and who have a mature faith would be great fits!

If you are interested in exploring any of these roles, please contact Grace Koleczek at grace.koleczek@risensavior.org or 952-698-1724. If you know a friend who you think would be a good fit…encourage them to consider it!

Summer Read: The Gift of Years

June 1, 2022 By Grace Koleczek

Discussing Sister Joan Chittister’s The Gift of Years: Growing Older Gracefully. Scroll down for registration form.

When: Wednesdays August 3rd through September 7 from 2-3:30pm. Come to as many as your schedule allows!

Where: Risen Savior Bays (except on Aug. 10th when we’ll meet in Resurrection Hall)

What: Join us as we discuss and reflect upon chapters from this book and share our experiences of the ‘gift of years’ and our faith.

Description of the book: Not only accepting but also celebrating getting old, this inspirational and illuminating book looks at the many facets of the aging process, from purposes and challenges to struggles and surprises. Central throughout is a call to cherish the blessing of aging as a natural part of life that is active, productive, and deeply rewarding. Perhaps the most important dimension revealed lies in the awareness that there is a purpose to aging and intention built into every stage of life. Chittister reflects on many key issues, including the temptation towards isolation, the need to stay involved, the importance of health and well-being, what happens when old relationships end or shift, the fear of tomorrow, and the mystery of forever. Readers are encouraged to surmount their fears of getting older and find beauty in aging well.

Obtaining the book. Participants may order their own books (we encourage you to order through a used book source, local store, or the library!). Orders through Risen Savior were due July 13th.
