Season of Creation 2021: A home for all? Renewing the oikos of God

September 1, 2021 By Grace Koleczek

About the Season of Creation: September 1st-October 4th
The Season of Creation is celebrated annually by tens of thousands of Christians around the world. During the Season of Creation, we pray and act to protect God’s creation. The Season of Creation is celebrated by Christians across the ecumenical spectrum, and the leaders of many faith traditions have encouraged us to participate.
The season begins on September 1, the Day of Prayer for Creation, and runs through
October 4, the Feast of St. Francis, who is the patron saint of ecology in many traditions.
This season is a special time for the Creator and each other. Some of us pray, some of
us do hands-on projects, some of us advocate. We all protect creation.
The momentum continues long after the season ends. By seeding ongoing prayer,
changes in lifestyle, and advocacy, the season grows hope in our communities each
year. It’s powerfully good work that’s urgently needed.

Season of Creation Prayer for 2021

Creator of All,
We are grateful that from your communion of love you created our planet to be a home
for all. By your Holy Wisdom you made the Earth to bring forth a diversity of living beings that filled the soil, water and air. Each part of creation praises you in their being, and cares for one another from our place in the web of life.
With the Psalmist, we sing your praise that in your house “even the sparrow finds a
home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young.” We remember that you call human beings to keep your garden in ways that honor the dignity of each creature and conserve their place in the abundance of life on Earth.
But we know that our will to power pushes the planet beyond her limits. Our
consumption is out of harmony and rhythm with Earth’s capacity to heal herself.
Habitats are left barren or lost. Species are lost and systems fail. Where reefs and
burrows, mountaintops and ocean deeps once teemed with life and relationships, wet
and dry deserts lie empty, as if uncreated. Human families are displaced by insecurity
and conflict, migrating in search of peace. Animals flee fires, deforestation and famine,
wandering in search of a new place to find a home to lay their young and live.
In this Season of Creation, we pray that the breath of your creative Word would move
our hearts, as in the waters of our birth and baptism. Give us faith to follow Christ to our just place in the beloved community. Enlighten us with the grace to respond to your
covenant and call to care for our common home. In our tilling and keeping, gladden our
hearts to know that we participate with your Holy Spirit to renew the face of your Earth, and safeguard a home for all.
In the name of the One who came to proclaim good news to all creation, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Habitat for Humanity: Faith Builds

May 21, 2021 By Grace Koleczek

August 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, 2022

Our are once again partnering with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity to help construct new homes in Chaska. The site we are building on is called the Faith Builds site because all the volunteers each week come from various faith communities around the Twin Cities Metro! It is the same site of the project last year but we are now working on new homes in the cul-de-sac “Niskanen Circle.”

Our partnership with Habitat includes a financial pledge of $4500. Interested in making a financial donation towards our pledge? You can contribute in any of the following ways:

  1. Write a check out to Risen Savior. In the memo line write “Habitat.” Drop this in the regular Sunday collection, bring it to the office, or send it by mail to the parish.
  2. Donate by credit card, cash, or check in person after Masses June 4-5, June 11-12, July 9-10, and July 23-24.
  3. Donate online by clicking here. Select “General Fund” from the drop-down menu. You MUST put the note “Habitat” in the box labeled “Order notes” on the checkout page. If you don’t include this, your donation will NOT go towards Habitat.

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity shared this video message with all those involved with the build we were a part of in August 2021. Thank you!

Last summer in July 2021, we welcomed Anne and Julia of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity for a presentation and discussion titled, “There’s no place like home!” The Transformational Power of Homeownership.

Some of the key learnings we took away included:

  • Habitat for Humanity was originally imagined as Koinonia Farm by a biblical scholar/farmer named Clarence Jordan in Georgia in 1942.
  • Twin Cities Habitat was first started by a Lutheran congregation in South Minneapolis in 1985.
  • Affordable, safe housing is linked to many other needs: quality education, stability, better health, access to transportation and jobs, and more! We heard one Habitat homeowner’s story of how her home is her “sanctuary.” It has meant family, community, security, and thriving together.
  • Habitat not only builds new homes but also purchases and rehabs homes, provides mortgages for clients to buy on the open market, helps clients make repairs so they can stay in their homes, does advocacy work, and more.
  • Historically because of racist policies and structures in place, affordable housing has been denied to People of Color. Despite many progressive social programs, Minnesota is one of the worst states for racial disparities in housing. The experience of searching for and securing housing for a Person of Color is much harder than for whites.
  • Habitat has extensive financial and homeowner coaching for their clients, which ensure that their homeowners are ready for the challenge of owning a home! They learn skills for financial planning, home repair, and being part of a neighborhood. Habitat families receive post-purchasing support as well.

Ready to get involved or have questions? Fill out the form below and Grace Koleczek, Risen Savior’s Social Justice & Adult Faith Formation Coordinator, will get back to you.

  • We are using the platform Flocknote to create an email newsletter that will go out once/month with updates and opportunities to get involved in Social Justice and Charity.
