2:30-4:30 p.m.: Lotería (Mexican Bingo)*

Lotería is an engaging and culturally rich game enjoyed by people of all ages. Its combination of chance, visual engagement, and social interaction makes it a cherished pastime and a vibrant expression of Mexican heritage.

It is often referred to as "Mexican bingo," a traditional game of chance with similarities to American bingo but played with a deck of cards featuring images rather than numbers. The game originated in Italy in the 15th century, traveled to Spain, and was introduced to Mexico around 1769.

Here's how to play Lotería:
  • Materials: Players are given one board (called tablero), featuring a 4x4 grid of randomly selected images from the 54-card deck. Players also need tokens, such as small rocks, dried pinto beans, or bottle caps, to mark off images on their boards.
  • The Caller (Cantor): One person is designated as the caller who shuffles the deck and draws cards one by one, announcing the image name, sometimes with a riddle or short poem alluding to the image. For example, for the umbrella card ("El Paraguas"), the caller might say, "For the sun and for the rain" ("Para el sol y para el agua").
  • Marking the Boards: Players locate the matching image on their boards and cover it with a token.
  • Winning the Game: The first player to complete a predetermined pattern (e.g., four tokens in a row, column, or diagonally, four corners, or a 2x2 square called a "pozo") on their board shouts "¡Lotería!" and wins.
  • Each Lotería Card costs 1 ticket per game. Single winner receives a $5 Certificate; multiple winners receive a $5 Certificate each. Youths (under 17 years) must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Lotería will be played in Bays 1-2.
