Prayers of the Faithful August 28 & 29, 2021

August 28, 2021 By Kevin Rotty

Prayers of the Faithful August 28 & 29, 2021

Presider:

Let us, out of a spirit of love, pray now for our own needs and for the needs of others.

Lector:

  • For the Church: that we may daily choose to follow Christ and find the fulfillment of all our deepest longings in Him, we pray:
  • For the grace to love unselfishly: that we may place the needs and welfare of others ahead of our interests just as Christ laid down his life out of love for us, we pray:
  • For our Archdiocesan Synod process: that all involved whether through planning, participation, and/or prayer may each be enlivened by Jesus’ example to follow God’s loving guidance rather than tempted to cling to our own human traditions, we pray:
  • For scientists who study climate and environment: that God will guide and inspire their work as they seek to understand the factors that impact our weather systems, we pray:
  • For all who are beginning a new semester, particularly those who are going away for the first time: that God will guide and protect them in the months ahead and help them to grow in wisdom, knowledge, and love, we pray:
  • For those who are ill and have asked for our prayers, including Don Katula , Karen Atkinson and Lawrence Dobias, grandfather of Rebecca Dobias. May God strengthen them, renew them, and fill them with healing, we pray:

Presider:

God of compassion, we ask for the gift of discernment, that we may be able to distinguish between the letter and the spirit of the law. Make us aware of the needs of others in all that we do. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

August 29: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 / James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 / Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

August 24, 2021 By Marianne Brass

Moses praises the wisdom of God’s statutes and decrees. In comparison to the codes of law of other countries in the ancient Near East, Jewish Law was unique, providing for humane treatment for both Jews and foreigners, free people and slaves. It was a wise and just code which, if observed, would help them live in good order with God and one another.

In the second reading, James emphasizes that all good giving and every perfect gift is from God, responding to the faulty belief that everything that happens, including temptation and suffering, is predetermined by God. All that comes from God is good. God has given us free will to follow or reject the order of his laws. He allows evil but does not cause evil to happen and has built in a remedy for evil in his divine plan.

Societal norms and practices ritualize or give external expression to what we hold in our minds and hearts in relationship with God and one another. The Pharisees so focused on the external rituals of their faith to the point that, rather than reflecting the love and respect at the core or spirit of God’s law, their actions became a prideful show of religiosity while their hearts were filled with judgment toward others. “All their works are performed to be seen,” Jesus commented (Matthew 23:5). We must take care lest our expressions of faith (what we do and say at Mass, for example) and of fellowship with others (a handshake or wishes for a good day) become mere words and actions devoid of meaning as happened with the Pharisees.

Prayers of the Faithful              August 21 & 22, 2021

Presider:

We, who were pledged by baptism to serve the Lord, pray now for one another and for others both near and far.

Lector:

  • For the Church: that we will find nourishment and sustenance in Christ, the Bread of Life, for our daily journey and the fulfillment for all the hungers and yearnings of our hearts, we pray:
  • For a new vision of our life journey: that we may be open to the vision God holds for us and that we may be free to rely upon God as we encounter trials, struggles, and doubts, we pray:
  • For relief from wildfires and drought: that God will help all who are fighting the wildfires, give strength to those who have evacuated, and send rain to relieve the areas suffering from drought, we pray:
  • For the people of Afghanistan: that God will preserve them from bloodshed, open passageways for those who have cooperated with western nations, and fill hearts with hope in their darkest moments, we pray:
  • For the people of Haiti, especially our Sister Parish in Gris Gris: that God will protect them from further harm, give them strength, and open the hearts of many to assist them, we pray:
  • For those who are ill and have asked for our prayers, including Karen Atkinson and Don Katula. May they find comfort and healing, through God’s love, we pray:
  • That those who have died, including: Louis Molnar, Mary Thul, Thomas Moran Sr. and Bill Tschohl. May they share in the heavenly banquet and experience the peace and joy of God’s kingdom. We pray

Presider:

God of life: you give us your Son as living bread, that we may have life with you forever. Hear our prayers for our own needs, for all who are hungry and for all who yearn for life. We pray in the name of your Son, Jesus, the bread of life. Amen.

August 22: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b / Ephesians 5:21-32 / John 6:60-69

August 17, 2021 By Marianne Brass

Jesus had stated to the crowd that he is the bread of life come down from the father and that, if people want to live forever, they must eat his flesh and drink his blood. When the crowd contesting Jesus’ statements left, he then turned to his apostles, many of whom were equally perplexed, even repulsed, as was the crowd by his words and left his company at this time. There must have been a significant number of disciples since, from their group, Jesus would select his twelve apostles and, later, a further 72 whom he sent out on a training mission (Luke 10:1). While many people were drawn to the charisma of Jesus and his ministry, it was natural that, as in any large group, there would be a wide range of commitment to the cause and acceptance of his teachings. Such was the case of the early Church to whom John addressed his gospel. Such is the case of the Church in our day and age. We would be mistaken to assume that those who stayed understood and accepted everything Jesus had taught. The apostles did not fully comprehend his teaching until after his Resurrection when they received the grace of the Holy Spirit. Their remaining with Jesus was based on faith, a gut feeling and sense in their heart that Jesus whose message they did not fully understand was “the Holy One of God.” Faith, the confidence that Jesus has the “words of eternal life,” sustains us as we seek to understand his message today and put his words into practice.
